Just as a man needs water to live, same is the case with plants. They need water to live too just like humans. The land of the province of Punjab is very fertile and it is known all over the world. Different kinds of crops are cultivated here. These crops are being irrigated in different ways. The word" Aab" means water and "Paashi" means "To Sprinkle", therefore the word irrigation , Aabpaashi, is used to supply water to the crops.
1. Canals
2. Tube-Wells
3. Wells
4. Ponds
5. Rain
⏩1. CANALS:-
The canal system of the punjab is the best canal system in all over the country. There are five big rivers in the province and there are also many small or big streams. Canals have been made on these rivers by building head-works. These water of these canals is used for irrigation purposes.
⏩KINDS OF CANALS:-
There are 3 kinds of canals in the province of punjab:
1. Permanent Canals
2. Temporary Canals
3. Flood Water Canals
⏩2. TUBE-WELLS:-
There are generally many areas in the plains of our province where irrigation is carried out with the help of tube-wells. Enough canal water does not reach the southern plains of punjab to irrigate the lands. Therefore, the farmers in these areas depend upon the water of tube-wells. Water is taken out with the help of electric motors, diesel angine and tractors. Tube wells are also used in the district of upper punjab.
⏩3. WELLS:-
To take water out of the deep wells and to use it for irrigation purposes is the oldest and ancient method of irrigation. Land is dug in a big hole of nearly 10 feet, with the depth of 30-60- feet. The water absorbed by the land collects in this hole which is taken out of these wells with the help of persian wheels. There are small barrels hanged on the persian wheels. A spinning wheel is attached to this persian wheel, which is pulled by a team of cows or other animals.
⏩4. PONDS:-
The irrigation in the Northern mountain areas of the province of punjab is done in a way that the rain water is collectyed in the form of a small dam. When there is less rain, this lake water is used for the irrigation purposes. This type of irrigation can be seen in the Districts of Rawalpindi and Chakwal.
⏩5. RAIN:-
there are certain areas of punjab province where natural and geographical features are such that there is no canal system available. In such areas even the underground water is very deep and cannot be taken out for irrigation.
